Beaches
All beaches in Mauritius are heavenly beautiful with splendid white sand and crystal-clear water in the most various blue tones. You have the choice:

Baie du Tamarin: this bay situated at the mouth of Tamarin River, in a beautiful landscape is the centre of surfing in Mauritius. Gigantic waves roll to the bay almost over the whole year.

Baie du Tombeau: 15 minutes by car away from Port Louis. Beach overgrown with cocos.

Belle Mare: white sandy beach with a deep lagoon at the east coast. The tourism centre extends to Trou d'Eau Douce.

Blue Bay: long beach (Pointe d' Esny to Pointe Corps de Garde) with white sand and crystal-clear ice blue water .Suitable for sailing, surfing and snorkeling.

Cap Malheureux: small fishing village at the north top of the island, with a fantastic view of the little islands Ile Plate, Ile Ronde and Coin de Mire. The beautifully situated graveyard and the chapel on the beach are remarkable for a photo. The name Cap Malheureux arose after the Englishmen landed secretly there on September 2nd, 1810 and expelled the Frenchmen from Mauritius.

Flic-en Flac: long beach on the west coast with a beautiful lagoon and a lot of tourism offers such as apartment houses, restaurants, snacks and shops.

Grand Baie: the biggest tourist centre in Mauritius with a variety of accomodations, water sports offers (excluding offers of the hotels), shops and excellent restaurants. One also finds a choice of discotheques and bars there. Several suppliers organize tours across the island and excursions on the sea; for example going to the island Coin de Mire. The beaches lie in a large (deep to the country outgoing bay) which are protected from wind and waves.

Ile aux Cerfs: small heavenly island at the East coast which can be reached by boats from Pointe Maurice (about 30 minutes trip). Splendid white sand and lagoons with water in all blue tones. Water sports offers and a restaurant are available. One meets wild living deer at raids over the island. Ile aux Cerfs is one of the most beautiful places in the Indian ocean. Don't fail paying a visit there!

Mont Choisy: beautiful long beach at the northern coast full of Filao trees.

Péreybère: a small beach at the coastal road, between Grand Baie and Cap Malheureux, appreciated by mauritians. The water is deep and clear.

Pointe aux Piments: quiet and stretched beach.

Rivière Noire: the centre of deep-sea fishing in Mauritius.

Trou-aux-Biches: one of the most beautiful beaches in Mauritius. It is particularly suitable for children since the water isn't deep there. It is also a nice place to snorkel, especially for beginners because you can reach the lovely coral-reefs and a variety of exotic fishes easily after only 50 - 100 m swim. The indian temple of Maheswarnath in Triolet can be reached after a short walk of about 30 minutes.

Botanical Garden of Pamplemousses The famous Pamplemousses Garden, ranking among the finest botanical gardens in the world, was established in 1735 by Mahè de Labourdonnais, with Mon Plaisir Castle once his residence. The 60-acre garden boasts 500 different species of plants, of which 80 are palms. Of particular interest are the giant water-lilies, a spice garden and the Talipot Palms, said to flower every 60 years after they die.

Chamarel Coloured Earths In the district of Black River, near the small village Chamarel in the south-east of Mauritius are coloured dunes of volcanic ash which are naturally displayed in an orderly pattern - a fascinating phenomenon well worth a visit. Casela Bird Park The Casela Bird Park, a beautiful garden and bird sanctuary of some 25 acres, is situated in the west part of the island Mauritius near the small village Flic en Flac. Almost 2500 birds of 140 differnet species are housed in some 90 aviaries. For example the Mauritian Pink Pigeon, one of the rarest birds in the world, can be seen here. Casela also houses other animals such as tigers, monkeys, lemurs, deer and giant tortoises, etc. Its natural setting, spacious layout and luxuriant vegetation also makes it a popular spot.

Domaine du Chasseurs At Anse Jonchée in the south-east, high in the hills overlooking Vieux Grand Port Bay, lies the private land of the Domaine du Chasseur. It consists of 3000 acres of tropical forest inhabited by hundrets of javanese stags, wild boars, monkeys and thousands of birds, among which is the nearly extinct Mauritian kestrel. This enchanting place is a must for hunters and nature lovers.

Natural History Museum The Natural History Museum, known as the Mauritius Institute, founded in 1880 and set in the Jardin de la Compagnie in Port Louis, houses the famous Dodo and numbers of other stuffed animals representative the fauna of Mauritius. The institute also functions as a library with a collection of over 50 000 books and contains a special section for researchers of the Mascarene archipelago.

Ylang Ylang Situated at Anse Jonchée, 15 km from the airport, is a unique plantation of some 15 000 Ylang Ylang trees amidst luxuriant vegetation, the only distillation plant in the county producing Ylang Ylang and other pure essential oils. Nature lovers will enjoy a variety of nature trails through scenic woodland while a guest table offers a choice of local recipes from fresh farm products.

Waterfalls Mauritius owns a lot of Waterfalls. One of the biggest ist the waterfall of the Rivière du Cap. Its water is falling down 90 metres. There is a way, you can go down and in the bassin, build by the waterfall, you can take a bath. Other waterfalls are the Rochester Falls near Soullic in the south, which are formed by strange columns of contracted lava, and the Chamarel falls with its fairylike atmosphere in the south-west next to the Coloured Earth of Chamarel.
